Natural textiles from waste hops.
Hops are a crop used for flavouring beer prevalent in the UK. When hops are harvested the majority of the plant including the stems, or ‘bines’, are considered a waste by-product. ‘Harvest’ re-purposes bines to create hop-yarn and a novel plant-based alternative to leather.
As Harvest textiles use bines, a current by-product, their use could drastically reduce land farmed for virgin fibres and carbon-intensive leather used in the fashion industry. Harvest could provide additional value to sustainable farmers, while enabling efficient land use and reducing our reliance on virgin fibres.
